For non-sailors
You measure a distance in nautical Miles (NM) on the sea and the speed in knots.
1 NM equals 1 minute (1') of Great Circle (Equator);
1 minute of latitude.
1 NM = (2 * radius of the Earth) / (360 * 60) = 1852 m
1 knot = 1 NM / h
