(From Les Sables) Marek "Goły" Gałkiewicz on Capt. Jarosław Kaczorowski's preparation for the AZAB regatta:
July 29, 2006
There are huge preparations on piers and at sailmakers and sailing shops are under siege. Everybody is "arming" themselves, because for the majority of participants it is the most important and the longest regatta in the season. You can see new masts and sails, and the noise of sawing, drilling and grinding can be heard everywhere. Sales representatives and repairmen from various companies are cruising among the boats regulating and programming the autohelms. Sailmakers and riggers are working almost non-stop. Each skipper is trying to prepare his boat as well as possible for the race on the Atlantic.
The preparations are also in progress in our camp. Fortunately, main work has been successfully done in Gdynia during our busy "holiday" (many thanks to Piotr and Stal Gdynia Yacht Club for letting us stay in the hangar, Mirek for the crane, Tomek - he knows for what).
We devoted most of our time to checking absolutely everything that could possibly break down and checking the weather forecast. Fortunately, our amicable Slovenian team Adria4ocean brought their routier with them - Jure (Slovenian Meteo manager), who collects and updates all possible scenarios and twice a day organizes meetings in order to explain what is happening and what to expect during the first days of the race.
Now the situation is very complicated and at least the first part of the race to Capo Finistere is likely to be a very "tactical" race.
Today, we only have to buy some food, clean the boat and we are ready. The race begins tomorrow.
Greetings from Les Sables,
Marek "Goły" Gałkiewicz
